Abstract
Odoiporus longicollis,
a major monophagous pest of banana, poses a significant threat to plantations
in southern India, particularly Kerala. Current control methods rely on
chemical insecticides, necessitating eco-friendly alternatives. This study
investigates the potential of Chromolaena odorata leaf extract for weevil
management. Toxicity bioassays were conducted to assess its effects on O.
longicollis, alongside enzyme assays measuring detoxifying enzymes and
biochemical profile changes. The extract, prepared using an acetone-based
soaking method, was tested in varying concentrations, determining the median
lethal dose (LD₅₀) and sub-lethal effects over 24–96 hours. Results highlight
the potential of C. odorata as a natural pest control agent, reducing reliance
on chemical insecticides.
